KBR POWER FACTOR REGULATOR

The KBR Power Factor Regulator is a microprocessor based unit, which measures system voltage and current (via a CT) and calculates active power, reactive power and power factor. It then switches in stages to bring in capacitive load to correct power factor to a pre-programmed figure.

During initial switch-on, the unit self checks the current and voltage connections and, if incorrect, displays a fault signal. The value of each stage can be programmed in manually or if a 'self current' CT is fitted, the unit steps through the stages and memorizes the capacitive reactive power of each stage (learning mode). The unit can then select which step to switch to achieve the target power factor with the least switching operations.

Where contactor switching is used, a delay is programmed in to allow previously energized capacitors to discharge before being reconnected. Where thyristor switching is employed, this delay is not necessary as the switching takes place at zero volts.

To protect the capacitors the KBR Regulator has an automatic shutdown facility in the event of excess voltage or excess harmonics. If a temperature detector is fitted the unit can switch in a ventilation fan at a set temperature and shut down all stages if the temperature becomes too high. A contact for a remote alarm is included with programmable delay time.
